  • What year is this transmission?

I have found the little 'tab' with the stamping on it to determine the year, but it only has the letter D on it. There is no number to go with it. Supposedly it is off a '76 bike. The transmission off of my OL's '75 FLH is stamped N 3, which I am told makes it a '73. The one off of my '74 is also stamped with just the letter D.

Know nothing about "tab" designation, but the bottom of the trans case is stamped with numbers that will give you a decent clue.

        Is it a stamping?
The 4-speed date tag was usually a little embossed plate with a letter in it, or a letter and a number - from what I can see, 'D' should be 1964 to 1967...

The numbers stamped on the front of the case under the detent plunger. They are coded to the VIN of the bike the box came out of and they are sequential from the early '60s so they are an indicator of date. They are also on bottom trees, left side of neck casting. All the major assemblies were coded together when built.

This sounds what I found. It is on the top of the case. Sorta under the clutch release arm.

So, I am looking at four different transmissions and trying to figure out the year of each. Just a curiosity thing going on. Three of them have the little embossed plate on the top of the case (thanks Al) and anti-theft numbers (thanks Rubone).
                    Stamping; anti-theft
                    Ratchet-top: D; N825
                    D; L5509
                    N3; P8077

Older hand-shift top: This is a 121-35 vintage with no studs for attachment to a primary case.
                    C7; no number

Sitting here thinking about how all the shit gets changed on these (our) old bikes. Little smile of amazement on my face when considering all the trouble and effort taken through the years to keep them going. Keep them alive. I can’t picture the new bikes being treated with the same reverence.

Will the same number appear on all locations?

No, each is different. But they were all logged by H-D to the matching VIN when new.

While it's out of the bike, where are these numbers and letters? This is on the bottom

On the front under the detent pawl hole. The numbers you show are just casting numbers and are on all of them.
